2–4 monthsDevelop one area of depth (data analysis, UX, or engineering) plus broad knowledge of product strategy, roadmapping, and stakeholder communication. The depth is what gets you hired.
Learn product frameworks
1–2 monthsJTBD, OKRs, Kano model, RICE prioritisation, PRD writing. Practice writing product specs for existing products — Apple, Spotify, or apps you use daily.
Build a product portfolio
2–3 monthsDocument a product teardown, a feature proposal with user research, and any side-project or volunteer work where you made product decisions. Quality of thinking matters more than code.
Target APM programmes or internal transitions
3–6 monthsAssociate PM programmes at Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce are designed for career switchers. Internal transitions from engineering, design, or data are the most common PM entry point.
