1–2 monthsWaterfall (traditional sequential) and Agile (iterative) are the two paradigms. Most corporate projects use a hybrid. PMBOK Guide for Waterfall, Scrum Guide for Agile — both are available free.
Get PMP-eligible or CAPM certified
2–4 monthsPMP requires 36 months of PM experience. If you don't have that yet, start with CAPM (no experience required) or PRINCE2 Foundation. These certifications open doors that experience alone doesn't.
Master PM tools
1–2 monthsMicrosoft Project, Jira, Asana, Monday.com, and Smartsheet are the most common. Learn Jira for tech projects and Asana/Monday for general business projects — knowing both positions you broadly.
Manage volunteer or side projects
2–4 monthsVolunteer to manage projects at your current company, a non-profit, or a community organisation. Documented project outcomes (on time, on budget, scope met) are the core of your PM portfolio.
Target coordinator roles to build experience
3–6 monthsProject Coordinator roles bridge the gap into PM. They provide exposure to real project cycles and count toward PMP eligibility hours. After 12–18 months as a coordinator, most people move up to PM.
